Brittlestars:.From
New
Scientist, August 22, 2001:.Brittlestars,
tiny sea creatures have lenses that rival the best that man's modern technology
can offer. Their spindly arms double as eyes thanks to microscopic crystals
in its skeleton that focus light.
But hey!
Consider
the wasp...
-Eye:.The
eye is perfectly matched to light sources. 800 times greater than a lighted
room at night is the Sun, yet because the eye so well adjusts, daylight
does not overwhelm the eyes ability to provide vision in this environment
containing such a high ratio of brightness.
The eye provides us with
color, form, edge, depth, and light intensity. Such an amazing design!
And, we won't even begin
to get into the complexity needed to provide the type of automatic adjustment
capability the eye possesses!
Ok, just a wee bit:.In
an unusual experiment, a univeristy student watched an upside down image
for a couple of hours. Suddenly the image became right side up.
Removing the image he saw
things continued upside down, that is, for another couple of hours. Then
everything readjusted.
